 BCS Belfast Branch are bringing the Local IT Community together as they hold a 7-a-side football tournament on Saturday 2nd June at the PlayBall Pitches in Stormont Estate
Following a number of years of finding relegation at the bottom of the events calendar, the 7-a-side BCS Belfast Annual Football Tournament is back to its Premiership success. Teams from across the IT community in Belfast are invited to participate in this one day event that hopes to be the IT sporting event of the Summer Calendar.

 The Belfast One City Conference wrapped up recently which brought together a diverse range of local and internationally renowned speakers on one platform to debate how the city can best make progress in a fair and evenly balanced way.
Starting at Cúlturlann McAdam Ó Fiaich on the Falls Road, the conference then moved to the Titanic Signature Building for day two of the conference. Over 100 delegates attended the sessions which concluded with a Reception at the residence of the US Consul General on Friday evening. |
 This week I want to take the opportunity to honour Northern Ireland’s IT professionals. The quality of IT specialists currently working in the region is second to none and while we still remain focused on developing NI’s knowledge based economy, we must remember to praise those who are already spearheading this cause. In particular, I would like to congratulate Colm McGoldrick, a County Fermanagh man and CEO of Maildistiller (a cloud email security specialist based at the Science Park) who was recently named the BCS IT Professional of the Year. |
A new online learning resource from the University of Ulster, which enables Architectural Technology students to engage in site visits without ever leaving the classroom, has been recognised in a major competition.
Construct Online, which was developed by David Comiskey and Dr Kenny McCartan, has landed an Innovation in E-Learning Award for Teaching and Learning from the JISC Regional Support Centre for Northern Ireland.
The website is made up of six videos along with a number of quizzes that test students’ knowledge and assess their progress. |

Applications are invited for a new international annual award in the area of computer conservation in honour of the late Tony Sale, one of the pioneers of computer conservation.
The Tony Sale Award, established by the Computer Conservation Society and supported by Google UK, is to recognise a person or a group that has made a singular engineering achievement in the area of computer conservation and to give public recognition to such work worldwide.
The award will be for demonstrable computer conservation work, which is publicly accessible, and is open to any individual or group anywhere in the world. |

 Greame Brown, a past pupil of Grosvenor Grammar School, is set to represent Northern Ireland at one of the largest international science exhibitions in Houston, Texas, after developing an innovative water disinfection device.
Graeme developed the ‘BrightWater Project’ which has the potential to contribute towards the eradication of water pollution which accounts for the deaths of more than 25,000 people daily in developing countries. He earned his ticket to the International Sustainable World Energy, Engineering, and Environmental Project (I-SWEEEP) after winning the ‘I-SWEEEP Award’ sponsored by the University of Ulster at the 2011 Sentinus Young Innovators Exhibition (YIE) – an event that is held annually at the Odyssey Arena, Belfast
I-SWEEEP is an international science fair held in Houston, Texas where over 1000 young scientists from 70 countries display their science projects based on the pressing issues of energy, engineering, and environment. |

The Réseaux IP Européens Network Coordination Centre (RIPE NCC) is an independent, not-for-profit membership organisation that supports the infrastructure of the Internet through technical coordination in its service region. Essentially it determines policy for IP addresses and associated issues - the very building blocks of the Internet. |

 Still a long way to go on the chalk progress bar just after the start of SpringUp – our 28-hour non-stop startup challenge. Hopefully it’s not big-headed to say that we’re chuffed with the outcome of our very first open event last month. One of our founding members Matt Campbell brought in a 28-hour non-stop startup hackathon called SpringUp and, to put it simply, five new web businesses were launched overnight. |

 Leading customer contact, data integration and telecoms specialists, Asidua helped make this year's NICS Live conference a formula for success as delegates, including Northern Ireland Finance Minster Sammy Wilson MP MLA, were asked to put their F1 driving skills to the test and see if they could beat the legendary Michael Schumacher.

 CEM Systems, part of Tyco Security Products, can today announce it has won the Belfast Telegraph Northern Ireland Business Award for its Excellence in Exporting. CEM’s revenue has grown significantly over the past 3 years and the company’s growing export business has undoubtedly helped, now accounting for over 50% of the company’s revenue.
Due to the economic downturn, CEM made a focused effort to increase business outside the UK and Ireland; in 2010, for the first time in the company’s history, export sales accounted for more than home market sales. |
 A University of Ulster PhD student has won a prestigious funding award to travel to New York next month and explore how digital technologies and projects in America could be used to enhance the experience of visitors to Northern Ireland museums and art galleries.
The research project will see Oonagh Murphy, from Belfast, spend five weeks in the Big Apple exploring how four of the world’s top museums have used social media and online content to promote art history education and engage and encourage new audiences in this increasingly digital age.
Her trip will enable her to identify transferable practices that could be applied by museums and art galleries in Northern Ireland. |

 BCS launches 2012 UK IT Industry Awards with new categories for app, cloud services, VAR and big data
Innovation in apps, cloud services, VAR and big data are among some of the new categories added to this year’s UK IT Industry Awards, run by BCS, The Chartered Institute for IT, and Computing which launch today. The new additions reflect the ever changing nature of the profession.
The annual Awards are renowned as the Oscars for the IT profession, providing a platform to showcase and celebrate best practice, innovation and excellence. |
The First Minister and the deputy First Minister have added their congratulations to the Belfast-based Cinemagic project following its receipt of a Business Innovation Award for Philanthropy in Los Angeles.
The Business Innovation prize was presented at the conclusion of a week-long celebration of achievements across a range of categories including Design, Technology Service, Provision, Philanthropy and Marketing & Communication held in Beverly Hills.

 InterTradeIreland has launched its annual all-island Seedcorn business competition and is seeking seed and early stage companies based in Northern Ireland to enter. Companies will have the chance to win a share of the €280,000 prize fund on offer and set themselves apart as one of the companies to watch in the future.
As well as the significant cash prize fund on offer, the competition mimics the real-life investment process and gives companies a valuable opportunity to refine their business plan and ensure that they improve their ‘investor-readiness’. |

 Tuesday 24th April saw Brightwater Northern Ireland play host to two of the biggest names in the global IT industry at the Titanic Building in Belfast. Oracle Corporation’s Simon Ritter and Dr Mark Little,CTO of JBoss at Red Hat, were the keynote speakers at Brightwater’s “The Titans Are Coming” event. Both are regular speakers at the biggest IT conferences in the UK and USA but had never before spoken in Northern Ireland. |

 Last weekend, in one room in Belfast, five new companies sprung up overnight. Five teams competed in SpringUp, the first event of its kind in Northern Ireland. SpringUp is a 28-hour non-stop challenge to build a startup and pitch it to a panel of judges posing as potential investors. |
 Allstate NI is celebrating after being named Outstanding Business of the Year at the 2012 Belfast Telegraph Northern Ireland Business Awards.
Judges, chaired by economist Professor John Simpson, were impressed by how the company, which provides software development services and business process outsourcing solutions in support of its US parent's global operations, has contributed to the local economy.
Allstate NI, which has offices in Belfast, Londonderry and Strabane, also took the title of Excellence in Corporate Social Responsibility and the company's Pádraic Sheerin was named Young Manager of the Year. |

Culture Tech is billed as a four-day festival of digital culture and technologies and will take place from August 29th to September 1st within Derry’s historic walled city centre.
