At the recent NI Environment Forum Conference hosted by Agenda NI, the Minister for the Environment, Alex Atwood, MLA, was joined by a panel of key speakers including Grant McBurney, Environmental Lawyer at Carson McDowell, in a discussion about the future direction of environmental policies in Northern Ireland. The event, which took place at the Grand Opera House on 19th January, brought together all the major players in the local environment sector and was chaired by Simon Turbitt, lawyer within Carson McDowell's Planning and Environmental Team.

 An all-female legal team from Belfast-based technology company Kainos, has been recognised for its expertise in contract negotiation and intellectual property protection after winning the In-House Legal Team of the Year Award at the 2011 Solicitor Recognition Awards.
The four strong team of solicitors was selected for successful contract negotiation and closure, gauging potential legal and commercial risk, enabling the company to deliver on ambitious growth plans. The team was also recognised for its skills in managing all aspects of intellectual property protection for Kainos, particularly through the roll out of Evolve – the company’s flagship healthcare application. |

 Most electricians who commenced their apprenticeship with ETT during 2006 and prior will have received training based upon the 16th Edition BS 7671 Standard.
The 2006 cohort of ETT apprentices have been provided with directed learning and examination on the 16th Edition as part of the first two years of their technical studies.
During year three and four of the apprenticeship, this cohort has been assessed via the NVQ system at Level 3 in regard to a working knowledge only of the 17th Edition.

Invest NI’s plans to support business R&D
The most recently published figures show that Northern Ireland expenditure on Research and Development in 2010 was the highest ever, with spending by businesses increasing by 6% on the previous year to £344 million, with spend by locally owned companies up 27 per cent to £109.9 million in 2010.
Businesses very clearly recognise the value of investing in new products and processes to keep ahead of the competition and strengthen their long-term position. |

 One of Northern Ireland’s leading IT and Communications companies, Leaf, has completed a cloud computing and virtual desktop deal with long established Belfast law firm, MTB (McCartan Turkington Breen), which is expected to make substantial savings to the firm over the next five years.
The deal includes a complete IT infrastructure re-fresh to create a private and secure virtual computing environment, enabling staff to run a virtual desktop from an ipad or laptop and for all IT support to be completed in the cloud. The work was completed in less than eight weeks and represents a significant investment. |
The University of Ulster has this week unveiled an innovative new pilot programme which will see it provide course credits for student entrepreneurs in two Derry-based creative industries courses.
The new module, which will launch in January at the School of Creative Arts at the University's Magee campus in Derry-Londonderry, will allow students to earn full course credits for starting a business in their final year. It is thought to be the first programme of its kind within a creative industries course in Europe. |

 It is expected that over 1,000 students will make the X the TXT pledge during Freshers Week at Belfast Metropolitan College. The X the TXT campaign encourages young drivers not to text and drive as well as educating them on the legal implications of texting and driving.

 Research indicates 90% of industry endorse license concept.
The Electrical Training Trust (ETT) has called on delegates at the inaugural ‘Spark Change Electrical Business Conference’ to spark change in the industry by supporting the ‘license to practice’ concept which aims to improve quality standards of Northern Ireland’s electrical sector.
The first of its kind in Northern Ireland, the conference took place on 13th September 2011 at the Dunsilly Hotel, Antrim and provided a unique, free of charge opportunity for NI’s electricians to network and have their chance to be heard on various issues affecting the industry including retention funds, the challenges of labour relations and licensing. |

CFO optimism falls to its lowest level in two years;
Risk appetite has risen sharply and leverage is coming back into favour;
Expansion is the top priority for CFOs, but they continue to maintain a strong focus on controlling costs and increasing cash flow;
Two thirds expect UK base rate to rise by the third quarter of this year.
The mood of optimism with which UK CFOs entered 2011 has weakened, according to the latest Deloitte CFO Survey. High levels of inflation and concerns about the effects of fiscal tightening seem to be weighing on sentiment. |

 A few months ago I blogged about how I wanted someone to provide on-line cloud storage for all my digital assets, and in particular my music. Well Amazon have taken the first step by announcing their cloud locker. It will be interesting to watch them flush out all the issues of licencing with the publishers, but after a lot of posturing and bluff-calling, a workable solution will emerge and others will jump on the bandcloud. |

 Good news for Aurion Learning
The award winning online learning company has just announced that it has been awarded a new contract to develop an equality and diversity e-learning programme for the Irish Universities Association (IUA) Equality Network, a sub group of the Irish Universities Association.
Aurion Learning will be working in partnership with the IUA Equality Network, to design and build an online learning programme suitable for all staff. The IUA Equality Network, with membership from Ireland’s seven universities, was established to work collaboratively to share best practice, develop institutional competence, develop intervarsity projects and co-operation, promote an inclusive university environment and prevent discrimination on all equality grounds contemplated in legalisation. |
