Enterprise Minister Arlene Foster has welcomed a partnership between business advisory firm BDO and Queen’s University Belfast, to build a stronger alignment between academia and family businesses.
The partnership between BDO Centre for Family Business and Queen’s University School of Management will focus specifically on issues impacting on family businesses in Northern Ireland.
Speaking at an event to launch the initiative in Queen’s Riddel Hall, Arlene Foster said: “The family business sector plays a vital role in the success of our local economy, as it is estimated that approximately 75% of all businesses in Northern Ireland are family run. |

 11th Annual InterTradeIreland Venture Capital Conference will help companies
unlock investment opportunities
Business Angel Funds of up to £70m/€85m are currently available to start-up companies across the island, Margaret Hearty, Director of Business Services and Programmes, InterTradeIreland, has estimated.
Speaking at the launch of the InterTradeIreland Venture Capital Conference, she said that with a total of almost £41m/ €50m investment in funding partnerships since the Halo networks were set up, there is an even greater opportunity for companies and that it is a crucial time for start-ups to become ‘investor ready’.
The 11th annual InterTradeIreland Venture Capital Conference, which will take place at Belfast City Hall on Wednesday 7th March, is designed to facilitate networking between Ireland’s leading venture capitalists, business angels and start ups that are seeking funding from across the island. |

 Secretary of State Vince Cable and DETI Minister Arlene Foster have officially opened a £6m composites research centre for Northern Ireland which links the University of Ulster, Bombardier Aerospace and QUB.
The University of Ulster and QUB co-own and operate the 3,700 sq metre Northern Ireland Advanced Composites & Engineering Centre (NIACE).
Funding to build the £6 million centre was announced in February last year and included financing from the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS) through the Strategic Investment Fund, Invest Northern Ireland and Bombardier Aerospace. |
The Secretary of State will officially open a flagship research facility in East Belfast - the Northern Ireland Advanced Composites Centre (NIACE) - with Northern Ireland Enterprise Minister Arlene Foster.
NIACE has received £2.7m in funding from the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS) and will bring together leading academics and dynamic companies to develop new technologies for the design and rapid manufacture of high-quality composite products. |

 Henrik Brusecke, a 17 year old student from St Columba’s Comprehensive School in Donegal, was celebrating following his success at this year’s Sentinus Young Innovators Exhibition, held at the Odyssey Arena. He was awarded the title of ‘Sentinus Young Innovator’ of the year by a panel of industry judges for his innovative ICT workload management programme.

 The Arthur Guinness Fund, which awarded €1 million to social entrepreneurs in Ireland last year, including charitable organisations Camara and Anam Cara that have operations in Northern Ireland, has re-opened for applications.
In 2011 another €1 million will be made available to social entrepreneurs who are making a positive and sustainable impact on communities throughout Ireland.

 Polished Halo – NI Business Angel Network Named UK Business Angel Network of the Year
Halo, the NI Business Angel network based at the Northern Ireland Science Park has been named UK Business Angel Network of the Year at the annual British Business Angel Association (BBAA) Awards Dinner in Manchester. Halo is supported by Invest Northern Ireland and Intertrade Ireland with the purpose of stimulating angel investing in NI-based companies.
This Award was open to any UK-based angel network that has significantly grown its network and increased awareness of angel investing in its region. |
