BCS Belfast Branch are bringing the Local IT Community together as they hold a 7-a-side football tournament on Saturday 2nd June at the PlayBall Pitches in Stormont Estate

 

Following a number of years of finding relegation at the bottom of the events calendar, the 7-a-side BCS Belfast Annual Football Tournament is back to its Premiership success. Teams from across the IT community in Belfast are invited to participate in this one day event that hopes to be the IT sporting event of the Summer Calendar.


This year’s event is brought to you in association with CyberSource.

The MAC and the Giant’s Causeway Visitor Centre are set to be two of the jewels in the increasingly impressive crown of Northern Ireland tourism.

 

So when tenders went out to design and install the interactive audio-visual technology that is key to these high profile projects, it might have been expected that the work would go to a large GB-based firm.

 

However, both the impressive arts venue and the revamped visitor centre opted instead for a local company – Niavac, based at Prince Regent Road in Belfast.

A Belfast-based IT solutions provider is celebrating ten years in business with plans for further investment and expansion in 2012.

 

EOS Systems launched in 2002, offering IT support and maintenance.

 

Since then, they have grown to provide complete business packages to both the private and public sector, including internet security and training in Adobe and Microsoft Products.

This week I want to take the opportunity to honour Northern Ireland’s IT professionals. The quality of IT specialists currently working in the region is second to none and while we still remain focused on developing NI’s knowledge based economy, we must remember to praise those who are already spearheading this cause. In particular, I would like to congratulate Colm McGoldrick, a County Fermanagh man and CEO of Maildistiller (a cloud email security specialist based at the Science Park) who was recently named the BCS IT Professional of the Year.

Enterprise Minister Arlene Foster today announced a £10million investment by Kainos that will create 60 software engineering jobs in Londonderry.

 

As part of the planned investment, Kainos will also undertake a major research and development project at its Belfast office that will create a further eight jobs there and invest almost £4million in staff training.

 

The company is one of Northern Ireland’s most successful indigenous ICT companies, employing over 300 staff across its offices in Belfast, Dublin, London and Gdansk.

A new online learning resource from the University of Ulster, which enables Architectural Technology students to engage in site visits without ever leaving the classroom, has been recognised in a major competition.

 

Construct Online, which was developed by David Comiskey and Dr Kenny McCartan, has landed an Innovation in E-Learning Award for Teaching and Learning from the JISC Regional Support Centre for Northern Ireland.

 

The website is made up of six videos along with a number of quizzes that test students’ knowledge and assess their progress.

Falling property prices and difficulty in obtaining mortgages have sparked a prolonged rentals boom in the Northern Ireland housing market. The latest survey from the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors (RCIS) show that prices in Northern Ireland are still falling, this coupled with buyers struggling to get banks to lend to them and vendors unable to sell, and more and more people are instead turning their attention to the property rental market.

 

Traditionally spring sees a spike in new applications and enquiries from potential tenants looking for rentals, and this has lead to one Warrenpoint software development company seeing a rise of 58% in its number of managed properties since this time last year.

Based in the Northern Ireland Science Park, SQS has provided specialised training services to support South Eastern Regional College (SERC) in the delivery of the programme. SQS has also recruited 21 per cent of the STA graduates.

Enterprise Minister Arlene Foster has announced that Retail Systems Technology Ltd (RST) in Londonderry has won business at Titanic Belfast.

 

The Minister congratulated the Campsie company on supplying its unique iTouch Point of Sale software and hardware system, developed with assistance from Invest Northern Ireland, to the iconic Titanic Belfast building.

The Chicago Mercantile Exchange group has confirmed it will create up to 90 jobs in Northern Ireland when it opens its first office in Belfast this year.

 

The group first announced details of its proposed investment in the North last January, but at the time declined to expand on how many positions it was likely to create.

 

The group, with headquarters in Chicago, describes itself as the “largest and most diverse derivatives marketplace”.

Belfast based eircom UK are part of a select body of 12 telecommunications and technology businesses who have been selected by the Cabinet Office to build a world-class Public Service Network representing a multi-million pounds government investment over the next four years.

 

The company, celebrating four years in Northern Ireland, is part of a framework agreement through which they will bid for work in the creation of what is called the Public Services Network.

 

Around 29 companies competed to be part of the framework agreement and just 12 were successful.

The annual Awards are renowned as the Oscars for the IT profession, providing a platform to showcase and celebrate best practice, innovation and excellence.

Tuesday 24th April saw Brightwater Northern Ireland play host to two of the biggest names in the global IT industry at the Titanic Building in Belfast. Oracle Corporation’s Simon Ritter and Dr Mark Little,CTO of JBoss at Red Hat, were the keynote speakers at Brightwater’s “The Titans Are Coming” event. Both are regular speakers at the biggest IT conferences in the UK and USA but had never before spoken in Northern Ireland.

This fantastic accolade was awarded to Fermanagh-born Colm, by British Computer Society (BCS) representative Adam Thilthorpe, at the impressive Titanic signature building, during yet another successful ‘IT Events Network Belfast’ program. The event itself was the second in a series of events for the Northern Ireland IT industry organised by Brightwater Recruitment in association with SyncNI and the BCS.
