Arcatech Limited in Lisburn is investing over £450,000 with support from Invest Northern Ireland to design and develop an innovative new product for the global telecoms market.

 

The company provides simulation and test equipment for network operators, telecoms equipment manufacturers, laboratories and universities throughout Europe, the USA and South East Asia.

 

Arcatech’s new product will be a testing system which will enable its customers to verify that their equipment operates effectively with the IMS network which provides for IP/Multimedia services.

Enterprise Minister Arlene Foster has welcomed a £25million upgrade to Northern Ireland’s 2G and 3G telecommunications networks.

 

The Minister was speaking after a meeting with representatives from mobile companies Three UK, Everything Everywhere and Mobile Broadband Network Limited who are jointly funding the initiative. When the upgrade is completed at the end this year, the companies predict 3G coverage at 94%, a significant improvement on existing levels and in network performance and customer experience.

Telecoms entrepreneur Denis O’Brien will give an inspirational talk at the University of Ulster’s Belfast campus tomorrow.

 

The Irish businessman will be guest speaker at Belfast-based chartered accountants, FPM’s 20th Anniversary Leadership Lecture, hosted by broadcaster Gerry Kelly.

Cable&Wireless Worldwide has made two new senior appointments, it was announced today. Sean Mahon has been appointed as managing director of THUS, a Cable&Wireless Worldwide business and will also have overall responsibility for the Cable&Wireless Worldwide Mid-Market Channel. Meanwhile, Stephen Colgan has been appointed head of sales Ireland at Cable&Wireless Worldwide.

Newtownabbey based Northgate Managed Services (Northgate) has further cemented its reputation as one of the UK’s leading providers of ICT services by being named as Classroom 2000’s (C2k) preferred supplier for the new ‘Education Network Northern Ireland’ (ENNI) contract. The news was announced today at BETT 2012, Europe’s largest education ICT event in London.

 

The five year contract will see Northgate design, implement and manage a completely new and innovative Private Cloud environment for all schools in NI, providing secure access to resources online, 24 x 7 from a wide range of devices.

Enterprise Minister Arlene Foster today welcomed the announcement that Belfast is to benefit from the £100million urban broadband fund announced by the Chancellor of the Exchequer in his Autumn Statement.

 

BT and Virgin Media have supported this initiative and committed to strengthening their networks in winning cities by offering broadband services with 80-100Mbps potential.

 

Arlene Foster said: “It is right that Northern Ireland should continue to benefit from national telecommunications infrastructure programmes.

Using proprietary technology, telecoms solutions company CMASS is providing dial plan changes for a global business information provider in 14 sites across 10 countries. Due to be fully completed at the end of September 2011, these changes are part of a global rationalisation programme within the organisation and will improve user-friendliness for this world leader in news and business information services.

The project involves converting multiple digit numbers to 7 digit numbers for over 12,000 extensions on Meridian 1 and CS1000 telephone switches in the 14 locations, including Brazil, Australia, Canada, Germany and Japan.

Causeway’s relationship with the London-based asset management company deepens following three years of cost-effective, on-demand IT infrastructure management and application development services

London & Belfast, Sep 1st, 2011 – London-based asset manager CCLA has further extended its relationship with Causeway, the application management services arm of Kainos, in the run-up to the launch of a major new fund by the company.

CCLA provides specialist investment services to not-for-profit organisations, and they have recently launched The Public Sector Deposit Fund, a triple-A rated cash fund for local authorities and other public sector bodies

The launch of the new fund required a major upgrade to CCLA’s business-critical dealing and registration system. CCLA instinctively entrusted the redevelopment work to Causeway Application Management Services, which provides critical infrastructure and application support services to the company.

New research from Ofcom shows that consumers in Northern Ireland are among the most enthusiastic consumers of communications technology in the UK.

92 per cent of Northern Ireland residents use a mobile phone and of those people, almost a quarter have a smartphone (23 per cent).

Furthermore, Northern Ireland leads the way across the UK for sending text messages (93%), taking photos with a mobile (71%), sending photo messages (64%) and playing games on their phone (31%).

In recognition of their ‘Delivering the Customer Promise’ training initiative, Surrey County Council were crowned winners of the Asidua sponsored ‘Contact Centre Training’ award during the recent Good Communication Awards.

Now in its seventh year, the Good Communication Awards promotes and encourages the public sector’s efforts towards effective communication with its citizens and its workforce.   Hosted by former newspaper editor, writer and broadcaster Eve Pollard, this year’s event was held in the magnificent surroundings of Arsenal’s Emirates Stadium.

The Next Generation Broadband Project has completed on time and on budget, Enterprise Minister Arlene Foster has announced.

Over £52million has been invested in the telecommunications infrastructure as part of the project, which involved the introduction of new technology to increase broadband speeds, primarily for businesses users, across Northern Ireland.

The Minister said: “The initial construction phase of this project to develop Northern Ireland’s telecommunications infrastructure completed on time and on budget and Next Generation Broadband Services are available.

Fujitsu is pleased to announce the extension of its highly successful contract with the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) for the provision and management of its ICT Managed Services.

The initial 5-year, £34m contract was signed in 2008 and saw the PSNI reduce the complexity of its service management by consolidating its existing, multiple IT service providers into a single provision by Fujitsu. This included the Service’s service desk, fixed line telephony network, data networks (covering WAN and LAN), desktop and laptop computer requirements, applications hosting services, a network of static and mobile automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) cameras and a range of applications support services.

Local graduates could miss out on hundreds of highly paid software testing jobs that are expected to be created here in the next few years because many are unaware of major new opportunities arising in the industry or they believe they will not be suited to them.

That is the concern of a group of 20 companies in Northern Ireland who have come together to encourage people to consider a career in the fast expanding field of software quality assurance. The group which was brought together by Invest Northern Ireland includes multinational firms such as Openwave, Deloitte, Allstate, NYSE and Liberty IT as well as leading local employers including Almac, First Derivatives and Replify.

Belfast based global IT services company Asidua, have expanded their successful Scholarship Programme for local IT and Engineering students, with the placement of five new scholars for the 2010/2011 academic year.

Now in its third year the Asidua Scholarship Programme, which was launched in co-operation with both Queen’s University Belfast and the University of Ulster, aims to attract fresh talent into the IT sector by supporting new IT and Engineering students financially during their academic studies and professional careers.

During a recent award ceremony held at Asidua’s head offices in Belfast, the worldwide IT and telecoms specialists announced that their 2010/2011 Scholarship Programme was awarded to five new local students - Emma Davidson, Victoria Potts, Alan Foster & Christopher Kane (Queen’s University of Belfast) and Michael Telford (University of Ulster).

- Communications and IT services company responsible for more than 4,800 jobs in Northern Ireland

 BT generated some £214 million for the Northern Ireland economy last year according to a report published today.

         The report, by DTZ Consulting, also shows that the global communications company supports nearly 4,800 jobs in the local economy through direct employment, expenditure with contractors and suppliers and the spending of its employees.

          The overall beneficial financial impact of BT activities is expressed as a “Gross Value Added” (GVA)* contribution.
