We partnered with Weavers Court business park to design, build and manage the first ever 10G business park. This was a ground-breaking 50:50 venture agreed in July 2011, delivered in November and officially launched by the US Consol Kevin Roland this month, February 2012.

 

Weavers Court is a campus-style business park situated in the heart of Belfast.

Intellectual Property (IP) is the name given to all creative ideas and expressions that have commercial value. Most nations have recognised the value to their economic success of attaching legal rights to IP including patents, know-how, copyrights and trademarks. Each has a distinct application, business value and set of protocols but for the purpose of this week’s column I am going to touch specifically on patents – their creation, exploitation and role in open innovation.

The guide is designed to help senior managers and directors in corporate, public sector and government organisations understand more about social media risks and how they can develop a social media policy for their organisation. Social media policies define what is acceptable and unacceptable from employees representing an organisation through social media channels or their own personal profiles and from members of the public who post comments to an organisation’s social media profiles.

Harvard Medical School team uses Andor Revolution DSD confocal for simultaneous measurement of intracellular pH and ATP in live cells


The importance that intracellular pH plays in cell biology is highlighted in a new paper published by the American Chemical Society. Written by a group of researchers from Harvard Medical School led by Professor Gary Yellen, it reports the engineering of the first ratiometric, single-protein red fluorescent sensor of pH, called pHRed, and its use to image intracellular pH in live neuronal cells.

 

Using Andor’s Revolution DSD spinning disk confocal technology, the team also established the unique capability of pHRed to be used in simultaneous measurements of intracellular ATP and pH because of its spectral compatibility with a second ratiometric ATP sensor, GFP-based Perceval.

Queen’s University Management School (QUMS) academics have launched a new Directory to help increase innovation and enterprise within the 19 countries of Southern and Eastern Africa.

 

Led by Dr Diane Holt and Dr David Littlewood of QUMS, the Trickle Out Africa Directory considers the role and potential contribution of social and environmental enterprises to sustainable development and poverty alleviation within the Southern Africa Development Community (SADC) and East African Community (EAC) regions.

 

Funded by the UK Economic and Social Research Council, the TOA Directory is the first searchable guide of these types of organisations and will be used to guide future initiatives including training, trade links and enterprise development schemes.

SQS Software Quality Systems, the largest independent software testing and quality management consultancy with focus on Europe, has announced that the company is currently embarking on a significant recruitment drive over the coming six months for its Irish operation. This latest expansion will see its workforce increase by almost 20 per cent to over 120 employees.

 

The firm, which has established offices in Dublin and Belfast, is now looking to fill positions for experienced software quality engineers, software testing managers, performance engineers and software test analysts.

Prometric, a trusted provider of market-leading test development and delivery solutions, today announced the appointment of 32 positions and office occupancy that is set to occur in January for the company’s Test Development Solutions (TDS) operational headquarters in the Finnabair Industrial Estate in Dundalk.

 

Making significant investments in talent worth €1,346,000 in total salaries (based on an average salary of €42,000 per year per employee) and a construction build out of €800,000 are just the first steps the company has taken to put in place a specialised Irish-based work force that will enhance the company’s in-depth test development support services and underlying technologies it currently provides to many of the world’s leading test publishing brands.

 

“Last month we announced our decision to locate in Ireland, and now we look forward to opening our facility with a new team who will be instrumental to our growth strategies for innovation,” stated Prometric’s President and Chief Executive Officer Michael Brannick.

Developed by Invest Northern Ireland as part of its wider Boosting Business initiative, it includes guides to the main types of intellectual property including patents, trademarks, copyright and design registration. Non Disclosure Agreements and licensing are also explained.

A short action film made by a Belfast film-maker is among the 10 pieces short-listed for the 2012 Academy Awards. The Shore, written, directed and produced by Terry George, was one of 107 films which originally qualified for the category.
