Enterprise Minister Arlene Foster today welcomed the announcement that global engineering company Siemens has awarded a multi million pound contract to Harland and Wolff Heavy Industries Ltd in Belfast.

Harland and Wolff is a heavy engineering company specialising in the shipbuilding, marine and renewable sector, including offshore construction. The Siemens contract will see Harland & Wolff design and build two substation platforms for the Gwynt y Môr offshore wind farm approximately ten miles off the coast of North Wales.

Arlene Foster said: “This is a significant contract win for Harland and Wolff as it continues to build its presence as a key player in global renewable energy markets.

“Northern Ireland’s strong knowledge base, skilled engineering capability and favourable geographical location will result in significant opportunities for local firms throughout the manufacturing supply chain to win business in an emerging offshore wind sector valued at over £100billion.

“Given this potential, Invest Northern Ireland is working to ensure that Northern Ireland companies compete at the forefront of the renewable sector.”

The Minister added: “Recent events such as the recent Renewable Marine Energy and Smart Grid Workshop, run by my Department in conjunction with the US Embassy, have also highlighted to investors the world class capabilities that Northern Ireland has to offer.”

Robert Cooper, Chief Executive Office at Harland and Wolff said: “We are delighted to have been awarded this contract as it demonstrates our continuing development as part of the UK supply chain for marine renewable energy.

“As a recognised renewables logistics base and prototype builder, we aim to provide a streamlined design and build process for Siemens and utilise the experienced gained with these offshore platforms to secure additional opportunities in the future.”
