Nurturing Future Leaders through Human-Centred Design

  • Martin Russell, Fujitsu’s Design Centre Lead across UK & Europe, reflects on leadership, collaboration and innovation trends as part of his involvement in the Centre for Democracy and Peace Fellowship – a programme committed to shaping a positive future for Northern Ireland.

The Centre for Democracy and Peace (CDP) Fellowship provides a unique environment for aspiring leaders, creating a connected community equipped to address both local and global challenges.

Throughout the Fellowship, Martin’s role was central to fostering collaboration. He brought professionals together to tackle real-world issues, using design thinking to encourage participants to view complexity as an opportunity rather than a barrier, and instilled renewed optimism in approaching difficult problems.

“The cohort of Fellows this year were as lively, energetic, thought provoking, passionate as ever. They brought their own set of unique talents, experience, knowledge and values as well as a set of challenges that were complex, complicated, difficult and real. Their ability to grasp a new and sophisticated methodology and apply it to their own challenges speaks volumes about their talent and credibility.”

    Design Thinking

As part of his role leading out on a Design Thinking approach, Martin prioritised leadership development, emphasising the balance between creativity and practicality. He guided fellows through the process, building resilience and sparking fresh ideas. Challenges were inevitable, yet Martin encouraged fellows to see obstacles as catalysts for innovation, revisiting their approach and adapting as needed.

A defining feature of Martin’s instruction was the integration of Fujitsu’s Human-Centred Design (HXD) methodology. Design Thinking plays a crucial role in tailoring these solutions to specific customer needs by embracing a human-centred approach to understand customer challenges, make creative solutions, and prototype and test solutions before implementation.

“Fujitsu’s HXD distinguishes itself from standard Design Thinking approaches by ensuring alignment with customers' corporate strategies and is specifically refined for digital challenges. HXD is our approach for empowering customers to accelerate their sustainable digital journey. Fo CDP fellows, this encourages them to translate strategic intent into tangible action through co-design workshops and real-world engagements.”

    Creating safe spaces

Martin believes the Fellowship is a safe space to experiment, learn and grow, with every perspective contributing to meaningful outcomes. He offers clear advice for future Fellows:

“Be open to new perspectives. Design Thinking is about putting people at the centre, valuing diverse viewpoints, and anticipating future needs. Don’t be afraid to prototype, test, and iterate, failure is just feedback.”

Looking back, the outputs achieved through Design Thinking were remarkable. Fellows not only delivered robust and sustainable outcomes but also fostered a culture of collaboration and creativity. The methodology made a profound difference to leadership development, encouraging fellows to view complexity as an opportunity rather than a barrier, and to approach the world’s most difficult problems with renewed optimism and purpose.
