For more than two decades, Barbara McKiernan has been a driving force behind one of Northern Ireland’s most successful recruitment consultancies. As Managing Director of VANRATH, she has helped shape careers, support business growth, and strengthen the region’s technology ecosystem, while also championing charitable causes and people-focused leadership.
This year marks two significant milestones: VANRATH’s 26th anniversary and Barbara’s 21st year with the business. Together, they tell the story of sustained growth, ambition, and a commitment to connecting talent with opportunity across Northern Ireland.
Barbara joined VANRATH more than 20 years ago as a recruitment consultant specialising in accountancy and finance. At a time when Northern Ireland’s economy was rapidly evolving, she played a key role in helping organisations identify and secure the talent required to grow. Her reputation was built on understanding both the needs of employers and the aspirations of candidates, creating lasting relationships that delivered value for businesses and individuals alike.

Over the years, Barbara progressed through the organisation, taking on increasing responsibility before ultimately becoming Managing Director. Her leadership journey reached another significant milestone recently when she acquired shareholding in the business, reflecting both her contribution to VANRATH’s success and her long-term commitment to its future.
A major part of that leadership has involved investing in people. Barbara has overseen the recruitment, training, and development of VANRATH’s high-performing team, fostering a culture built on collaboration, inclusion, and professional growth. Colleagues describe her leadership style as people-first, recognising the importance of creating an environment where employees can thrive and build meaningful careers.
That focus on people extends far beyond VANRATH’s own workforce. Throughout her career, Barbara has played an important role in supporting Northern Ireland’s business community.
As Northern Ireland has developed into an increasingly important technology hub, recruitment specialists have become key enablers of growth. VANRATH has helped countless technology professionals identify new career opportunities while supporting employers ranging from high-growth start-ups to established multinational firms. In doing so, they have contributed to the development of the talent pipeline that underpins much of the region’s thriving tech ecosystem.
The company’s success has been built on continuous investment in its people, brand, and infrastructure. Alongside embracing modern recruitment technologies and AI-powered tools, VANRATH has maintained the relationship-driven approach that remains at the heart of effective recruitment. That balance between innovation and personal service reflects the values that Barbara has championed throughout her leadership.

Beyond business, Barbara has also demonstrated a strong commitment to giving back. In late 2026, VANRATH celebrated a landmark anniversary with a Charity Casino Night at Belfast’s Custom House, bringing together clients, partners, and members of the wider business community to raise funds for Northern Ireland Children’s Hospice and Cancer Fund for Children. The event raised thousands of pounds for the two charities, supporting families facing some of life’s most difficult challenges.
It is an initiative that reflects Barbara’s belief that successful businesses have a responsibility to contribute positively to the communities in which they operate.
As VANRATH enters its next chapter, Barbara McKiernan’s story serves as a powerful example of leadership built on dedication, resilience, and a genuine commitment to helping others succeed. It is exactly this people-first mindset that has made Barbara one of the most enduring and popular figures within Northern Ireland’s thriving business community.
